GreatSchools.org launches new summer learning resources
New grade-based summer learning program to help families curb summer slide during COVID-19
OAKLAND, CA (July 1, 2020) — GreatSchools.org announced new, free grade-based summer learning calendars, materials, and activities to help families support learning at home during the summer months amid the coronavirus crisis. The four week program is designed to help children from kindergarten through fifth grade practice important skills, build on what they learned this past year, and get ready for the next school year.
The grade-based summer learning calendars include daily schedules of standards-aligned activities in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, art, and a PE challenge. Whether a child is being supervised by a parent, sibling or other caregiver, these daily doses of academics and fun are designed to be engaging for kids and accessible for any caregiver. Parents and caregivers can print out these worksheets and supervise their child while they are doing them or have them work independently and check on their progress at the end of their work day.
“This summer is unlike any other summer we have seen in our lifetime,” says Carol Lloyd, GreatSchools’ Editorial Director. “With school programs cancelled and summer camps closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, millions of children are at risk for severe summer learning loss on top of the anticipated ‘COVID-19 slide’. We have designed these calendars to help families continue learning at home during the summer months and prepare their child for success for the upcoming school year.”
GreatSchools also has a collection of articles and resources, in English and Spanish, for parents to understand what are some of the important academic standards and social emotional milestones kids should have acquired this past year in kindergarten to eighth grade.
During these unprecedented times families can also use GreatSchools school closure learning guide, in English and Spanish, to access more grade-based tools, trusted partner resources, help with essential needs, resources for students with learning differences, and socio-emotional tips and guidance for learning at home.
GreatSchools.org’s experts are available for media interviews.
