GreatSchools and Maponics Team Up to Offer New School Ratings and Attendance Zones Mapping Tool

Partnership delivers the most comprehensive school-level data coverage available

Location-based data provider Maponics announced today that education and parenting website, GreatSchools, has launched an interactive school ratings and attendance zones mapping tool featuring Maponics School BoundariesTM. Now, GreatSchools visitors can enter an address and see school locations, attendance zone boundaries, district lines, and ratings for all nearby schools on one map. The partnership marries two best in class datasets to deliver a powerful tool that will help millions of families plan for their future.

“With Maponics school attendance zones visually displayed we can finally show people a more complete view of their real school options,” said Bill Jackson, Founder and CEO of GreatSchools. “We have always had school pinpoints on our maps. But before, if parents wanted to know whether an address was assigned to a specific school, they had to do their own research. Showing mapped school attendance zones alongside our school ratings adds significant value and saves parents a lot of time.”

The nation’s leading guide to PK-12 schools, GreatSchools features over 200,000 public and private school profiles, and more than one million parent ratings and reviews. Last year, nearly half of all families with school-age children accessed information via Thirty percent of these families visited with moving in mind, typically before beginning an actual real estate search. Armed with school ratings, many continued on to research individual properties via links to, GreatSchools’ real estate search partner.

“The GreatSchools ratings system is the gold standard in educational evaluation tools,” said Darrin Clement, CEO of Maponics. “Combining our nationwide school attendance zone boundaries with GreatSchools’ school profiles is a perfect synergy. As a parent myself, I am excited about putting this kind of actionable information in the hands of conscientious parents. We are seeing more and more websites adding our school boundaries with attendance zones, especially those that help relocating families and real estate search sites. It makes sense, because without this information, home buyers are essentially flying blind.”

Until recently, websites looking to offer nationwide school attendance zone information had little recourse. As a result, many chose to provide school district boundary information instead. School districts often include several schools for each level of education, with school quality varying dramatically between schools. Because of this, providing the school district alone did not tell parents which school their children would be eligible for or what type of education they would receive.

Launched in 2010, Maponics School Boundaries is the first commercial GIS data to include explicit school attendance zone boundaries (also called catchment areas) for individual schools across the nation. In addition to locally-sourced school attendance zones for more than 70% of the U.S. student population, this dataset features school district boundaries, and public and private school locations and profiles. Each school’s GreatSchools ID is also listed, for easy integration with the GreatSchools rating system.

“Like any due diligence before a home purchase, people are encouraged to check that no last minute changes have been made to attendance zones before signing on a home,” said Mr. Clement. “But being able to access our highly accurate school attendance zone boundaries alongside GreatSchools’ comprehensive ratings provides an incredible tool for parents making critical relocation decisions.”
